When Andy awoke the next morning, he lay in bed for a while, soaking in this part of his new world. The walls of the bedroom had a fresh coat of newspapers, while the ceiling was covered with clean cardboard. Rudimentary as the coverings were, Andy had to admit that the jobs were neatly done, and he realized that several people must have worked very hard with limited resources to get the house ready for them.
"Well, what do you know?" Andy said.
"What?" LaTonya asked sleepily, turning toward him and draping her arm across his chest.
"National Prohibition has ended."
LaTonya opened one eye. "What?"
"'Yesterday Utah became the thirty-sixth state to ratify the twenty-first amendment, thus ending the nation's long dry spell.'"
LaTonya sat up in bed and looked at Andy as if he had taken leave of his senses.
"Andy, what in the world are you talking about?" she asked. "That all happened last year. Don't you remember the big party we went to?"
Andy pointed to one of the newspapers that covered the wall. "I know. I was just quoting from the bedroom edition."
"The bedroom edition?" LaTonya looked around at the walls, then gasped. "Good Lord, look at this. We live in a newsstand!"
"I think that's handy," Andy said. "At least the next time you get a 'headache,' I won't be bored."
"Andrew Booker," LaTonya said. She crossed her arms and reached for her shoulders, bunching up the nightgown in her hands and pulling it over her head. Then, nude, she leaned into him, pressing her breasts against his bare chest and pushing her hard nipples into his skin. "When have I ever had a 'headache'?" she asked. Her dark eyes were half closed and smoldered with desire.
Andy grinned at her. "Well, I guess you haven't," he said, his reply a mumble since she was kissing him.
They made love in the soft light of early morning. The springs of the bed squeaked beneath them, softly and almost musically. Their lovemaking was warm, lazy, and intensely satisfying, and when Andy felt himself approaching the pinnacle, he forced himself back, waiting for LaTonya and, in so doing, holding on to the delicious agony of the quest. Finally he heard LaTonya take several sharp gasps, then felt her quiver, and her hands gripped his back. Andy then surrendered himself to the heat that had been pulling at him for several moments. Suddenly there was no newspaper-covered bedroom in a squalid little house in an impoverished Mississippi town. There was only moist, connected flesh and spurting seminal fluid and pulsating sensation that blotted out everything.
Andy and LaTonya were lying in each other's arms when a voice suddenly called through the door. "Brother Doctor, are you folks all finished in there? There be quite a few patients lined up out here, waitin' to see you."
Startled and embarrassed, Andy and LaTonya stared into each other's eyes. Then LaTonya burst out laughing.
"Welcome to Mississippi, Brother Doctor," she said softly, kissing him one last time.
When Andy had a reprieve from patients just before noon, he drove into town.
